Health and Safety Certificate of Recognition Program for Petroleum Industry

http://www.enform.ca/267

The Workers' Compensation Board (WorkSafeBC) and Enform (formerly Petroleum Industry Training Service - PITS) have announced the launch of a new health and safety program aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of injuries in B.C.'s booming oil and gas sector.

Enform, in partnership with WorkSafeBC, will be offering a Health and Safety Certificate of Recognition (COR) to petroleum industry employers who have a health and safety program that meets approved audit standards. As well, WorkSafeBC will provide employers with a 5 percent rebate on their WorkSafeBC assessment rate after they complete and meet the COR program standards.

Enform has opened a satellite office at the Northern Lights College in Fort St. John. Employers and workers will have greater access to Enform industry specific training through the Northern Lights College.

Further details on the COR program are explained in the BC Petroleum Industry Certificate of Recogition (PDF 14KB) information sheet.

Faller Certification Program for the Oil and Gas Industry

BC's OHS Regulation requires workers who fall or buck trees to be qualified by meeting standards acceptable to the Board. Any new worker falling trees greater than six inches in diameter must be trained to the same standard. These standards are outlined in the BC Faller Training Standard.

This standard has been adopted by the oil and gas industry and opens the door for fallers in the industry to be recognized as professionals. Enform (formerly the Petroleum Industry Training Service -PITS), on behalf of the petroleum industry, will administer a certification program for existing fallers in the summer of 2005 (referred to as the "Grandfathering" process). The deadline for submitting applications for grandfathering is July 31, 2006.

Grandfathering Process:
Existing oil and gas industry fallers that can show a minimum of two years experience can enter into a "grandfathering" process that allows them to challenge the training standard. This challenge is a three step process:

  1. The faller will submit a completed application form with payment to Enform
  2. Once the application has been approved, an appointment with a Qualified Supervisor/Trainer (QST) will be scheduled by Enform
  3. A written/oral and practical skills examination with a minimum pass mark of 75% will be administered by the QST
The grandfathering process for the oil and gas industry is explained in the The Faller Certification Program for the Oil and Gas Industry (PDF 185 KB). To apply for grandfathering, complete an Application Form (PDF 95 KB) for Faller Certification for Existing Fallers.
