 Marine Craft Operator

 

The requirements for marine craft operators in BC are set out in section 17.18 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

Certification for marine craft operation is issued under the Canada Shipping Act - federal legislation - and is therefore not within WorkSafeBC's jurisdiction.

The web site of Transport Canada has information about Marine training, examination, and certification. The following materials are available to view or download for free.

  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Training Course
    Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Training Course contains the minimum training requirements for operators of commercial vessels, other than TUGS and Fishing Vessels, up to 5 tons, near coastal and for fishing vessels up to 15 tons, or 12 metres, near coastal or sheltered waters voyage.
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Training Program
    The purpose of the directives contained in this publication are: 1) The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers, as amended (STCW Convention), provides standards regarding emergency, occupational safety and survival functions in Chapter VI of the mandatory Code "A". 2) This document describes the revisions to Canadian Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training courses. The revisions are being made in order to align the MED courses with the requirements of Regulation VI of the STCW Convention and Chapter VI of the STCW code.
