About this Calculator

What is the purpose of this calculator?

This calculator estimates the level (low, moderate, or high) of risk for injury when lifting or lowering.

What data is the calculator based upon?

This calculator is a simplified adaptation of the NIOSH Lifting Equation:

Waters et al., Revised NIOSH Equation for the design and Evaluation of Manual Lifting Tasks, Ergonomics, 1993 Jul; 36(7);749-76
Waters et al., 1994 Applications manual for the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation, DHHS (NIOSH) Publication no. 94-10

The calculator incorporates the analysis criteria (WAC 296-62-05174 Appendix B) in Washington State's Ergonomics Rule.

In conjunction with this calculator, what information should I look at to identify and assess the risks of lifting/lowering?

Users of this calculator should refer to the two WorkSafeBC worksheets:

WORKSHEET A - MSI Risk Factor Identification (PDF 63kb)

WORKSHEET B - MSI Risk Factor Assessment (PDF 1.3mb)

These worksheets provide detailed information on identifying and assessing the risks associated with lift/lower tasks.

Is the use of this calculator required by the OHS Regulation?

No, this calculator is intended to help users perform a risk assessment. Use of this particular tool is not required by the OHS Regulation. Employers must identify factors in the workplace that may expose workers to a risk of musculoskeletal injury (MSI). If a risk is identified, an employer must assess the risk.
