In this lesson, students learn about the procedures for safe use of kitchen tools and equipment.

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN



  1. Download or order StartSafe Safety Tip Series posters to place around your classroom
  2. Download or order Safety Kit for the Tourism and Hospitality Industry from the WorkSafeBC website
  3. Invite students to volunteer to participate in five role plays using the Safety Kit for the Tourism and Hospitality Industry
  4. Assign each pair a workplace hazard to work with:
    • Using kitchen equipment safely
    • Handling hot objects and liquids safely
    • Preventing slips, trips, and falls
    • Using knives safely
    • Lifting safely
  5. Handout a hazard worksheet to volunteers and instruct them to teach the class safe work practices by demonstrating each one through role playing
  6. Debrief after each role play to ensure students fully understand safe work procedures. Verbally quiz students
  7. Following the role play, remind students of the Jennifer Fourchalk accident in the Lost Youth video and discuss the importance of following safe work procedures
