5.1 Identify general strategies to minimize workplace hazards and prevent workplace injuries.
LESSON #1
PURPOSE
This lesson helps students to become aware of the potential challenges of young workers, such as their hesitation to ask for proper safety training or to question the safety of work procedures.
SUGGESTED TIME
1 hour
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
- reflect and explore verbally the emotional impact of the stories of four injured young workers who speak candidly about how workplace accidents changed their lives forever
- dispel the six myths regarding safety and identify strategies for each myth that workers and employers can take to minimize workplace hazards and prevent others from being injured or killed in the workplace
TEACHING STRATEGIES
- video presentation
- personal reflection
- in-class discussion
INSTRUCTIONAL TOOLS AND RESOURCES
- Lost Youth (individual stories) video
- Lost Youth Discussion Guide
INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN
- Order video from WorkSafeBC
- This video consists of four young worker profiles from different industries
- For hospitality specific content, show the vignette of Jennifer Fourchalk
- Copy and distribute hospitality specific information from Lost Youth Discussion Guide or if appropriate, use the whole guide
- Before showing the video provide background and introduce video and vignettes you have chosen
- Show the video
- Following the video vignettes you have chosen, discuss the issues raised by the young worker(s) and the emotional impact their accidents have had on them
- Debrief using the discussion guide to identify the six myths, facts about workplace injuries and possible actions to minimize and prevent workplace hazards and injuries (You may want to present the myths and facts information in the form of a quiz: Read each numbered statement and ask what the students think it is a "fact" or a "myth," then relay the facts provided in the discussion guide)
- Ask students to write one page on how the injured young worker's life has change as a result of their accident and to describe their feelings towards the importance of workplace health and safety since viewing these vignettes
