PURPOSE



This lesson identifies workplace health and safety rights of workers and encourages students to learn about the potential dangers of any new job or task by asking the right questions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES



Students will:
  • identify and articulate the right to refuse unsafe work by learning the definition of the three Rights of Workers by creating visual aids
  • recite core safety questions to ask potential employers that support the three Rights and how to communicate concerns for workplace hazards

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN



  1. Instruct students to go the website and pre-read Know Your Rights and Speak Up sections
  2. Download Getting a Job? Ask questions about safety handout. Print off a copy for each student or instruct students to print a copy for themselves
  3. Break class into three groups, each representing the three different 'rights'
  4. Ask each group to create a poster and slogan to represent each of the three rights
  5. Have each group present their poster and slogan to the class
  6. Link the questions in Speak Up & Know Your Rights to Getting a Job? Ask questions about safety
  7. Discuss and ask students if they can come up with any other questions related to their three rights
