Servicing Mobile Equipment: Crushing Injuries

A health and safety message from the WCB


There have been several recent incidents resulting in serious crushing injuries or fatalities when servicing mobile equipment. Almost always, these types of incidents can be prevented. This bulletin includes links to resources and information to help prevent these types of accidents. If servicing mobile equipment takes place at your workplace, please review these resources and regulations and share them with your co-workers or staff.

Crushing Injuries

Recent Accidents

  • A worker is fatally crushed while changing a hydraulic hose on a forklift when the blocking fails.
  • Fatal injuries are sustained when a vehicle rolls off an automotive hoist.
  • A worker is pinned under a vehicle when it slips off the support arms of an automotive hoist.

Ensure these things are done to prevent similar accidents:

  • Adequately block the elevated parts of mobile equipment during maintenance.
  • Chock vehicle wheels to prevent the vehicle rolling off the hoist.
  • Make sure the hoist provides adequate support to the vehicle.
