WorkSafe Bulletin

Notice to Anyone Who Operates a Crane

Register with the BC Association for Crane Safety before July 1, 2007

If you operate or own a crane, you need to be aware of changes to the WorkSafeBC regulation that deals with crane operator certification.

Section 14.34.1 of the OHS Regulation states:
On and after July 1, 2007, a mobile crane, tower crane or boom-truck must be operated only
(a) by a person with a valid operator's certificate issued by a person acceptable to the Board, and
(b) in accordance with any conditions stipulated on the certificate by the issuing person.

To be in compliance after July 1, 2007, crane operators must be in possession of a document issued by the BC Association for Crane Safety (BCACS). This document will indicate that the operator is either fully certified or is registered for assessment with the BCACS. The registration document will be a letter issued by the BCACS.

Existing crane operators who have registered with BCACS before July 1, 2007 will not be required to perform the same level of assessment as new operators or non-registered operators. This is the best reason to register now!

There is no cost to register. Your information will help the BCACS determine how many operators exist in B.C. in order to organize a province-wide and cost-effective assessment program.

The following describes types of equipment operators covered:

Section 14.34.1 applies to operators of all mobile cranes, boom trucks, and tower cranes with a rated capacity greater than five tonnes or with a boom length greater than 8 metres.
