Welders risk ear damage
from hot slag

Welders are at risk of permanent ear damage if particles of hot slag enter their ear canals. Hot slag can burn their ear drums and lead to ear infections, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and balance problems. These painful burns can take a very long time to heal properly. In some cases, surgery may be needed. Welders often overlook wearing earplugs not only for hearing protection but also for protection against hot slag.

  • Wear a full-face welder's helmet to protect your ears — as well as eyes and face — against particles of molten metal.
  • Use foam or silicone custom-molded earplugs for protection against both hot slag and noise.
  • Make sure your cotton welder's cap covers your ears for added protection.
  • In addition to ear protection when welding, wear flame-resistant work clothing, gauntlet gloves of leather or other suitable material, a leather apron for heavy work, and safety footwear.
